The best Microsoft Copilot alternatives depend on why you are looking. If the add-on price is the problem, ChatGPT Business, Claude Team, Mistral Le Chat and nerix all sell team seats at similar or lower prices without needing a Microsoft plan. If you want to choose between models, a multi-model workspace fits. If you live in Microsoft 365, Copilot itself may still be the right answer, and its free chat is worth trying first. This guide compares the options honestly.

Prices checked in October 2026. Vendors change plans often, so check the official pages: Microsoft, ChatGPT Business, Claude, Gemini and Mistral.

Where Microsoft Copilot stands

Microsoft lists Copilot Business as an add-on at $18 per user a month on a yearly term (originally from $21, with the discount offered to eligible existing customers until the end of 2026, for the first year) and $25.20 month to month. Bundles are listed too: Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot at $23.50 per user a month billed yearly, and Business Premium with Copilot at $32. Copilot Chat is included at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans.

Its strength is reach. It works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and with a Copilot licence it can use the files and mail you already have. Microsoft's documentation says Copilot Chat data is stored and processed in the EU or EFTA for EU customers, with a caveat: under heavy load, model calls can reach other regions.

Its limits are the other side of the same coin. It needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan, it is priced as an add-on, and without the paid licence Copilot Chat cannot read your organisation's shared data, although you can upload files to it directly.

ChatGPT Business and Claude Team

These are the two general-purpose assistants most teams try first. ChatGPT Business is $25 per user a month, or $20 billed yearly, and a workspace needs at least two paid seats. Claude Team is the same price, $25 a month or $20 yearly, for teams of two to 150, with a Premium seat at $125 a month ($100 yearly) for heavy users.

Both give a team a shared workspace with admin controls and business data terms, and neither requires Microsoft. Where they fall short: they do not read your Microsoft 365 files by themselves, so you upload documents or set up connectors, and each offers only its own maker's models.

Gemini Enterprise

Google lists Gemini Enterprise Business from $21 per user a month and Standard or Plus from $30. It is the counterpart of Copilot for companies on Google Workspace, so it makes the most sense if that is where your files are. If your company is on Microsoft, it brings little of Gemini's main advantage.

Mistral Le Chat

Mistral lists Team at $24.99 per user a month, with up to 30 GB of storage per user, domain verification and data export. SAML single sign-on and audit logs are on the Enterprise tier, priced on request. It appeals to European teams who want to buy from a European company. Mistral's page does not state where Le Chat data is hosted, so ask before assuming.

nerix

We make nerix, so read this with that in mind. nerix is not an assistant bolted onto one office suite. It is a workspace where chat answers from your documents with the page of each source shown, alongside a library, team chat, tasks, a help desk, meetings and email drafts. You choose the model per task across providers: Mistral is the default, processed in France, with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google available, and an owner can restrict the workspace to providers hosted in its region. Hosting is in Germany.

Prices are in euros: Free for one person, Plus at 15 euros, and team plans per seat, Team at 24 euros (three seats minimum) and Business at 42 euros (ten minimum, with single sign-on and an audit log). Credits pay for AI work, shown before you send, with a spending cap on by default. See pricing and models.

Falls short: it does not live inside Word, Excel or Outlook, it has fewer integrations than Microsoft, and it has no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certificate yet, as its security page says. It suits teams who want the AI to work on their documents and their team's work in one place, not teams that want an assistant inside Office.

How to choose

  1. Try Copilot Chat first. It costs nothing extra on eligible plans. If it covers what people ask, you may not need a licence at all.
  2. Count who needs the paid licence. The add-on is priced per person. Buy it only for people who work in Office all day.
  3. Decide where your knowledge lives. If it is in SharePoint and Outlook, Copilot's native access is hard to match. If it is in PDFs, shared folders and mixed tools, a document-first workspace may serve better.
  4. Decide on model choice. One vendor's models are simpler. A multi-model tool lets you use a cheaper model for routine work.
  5. Check data terms and location for the exact plan you would buy.
  6. Run a two week trial with five real tasks and compare the answers and the cost per person.

A word on switching costs

Leaving Copilot is rarely all or nothing. Your files stay in Microsoft 365, and your people stay in Outlook and Teams. What changes is where the AI work happens. Teams that move part of it usually keep the following in mind.

First, the assistant outside Microsoft will not see your mail or SharePoint unless you connect it, so decide which documents you will bring across and where they will live. Second, rules about client data still apply: put the rule in writing, such as "no client names in the free tool", and give people the approved tool so they are not tempted by an unapproved one. Third, count the full cost, including admin time, training and the licence you may still keep for a few Office power users.

The short version

Microsoft Copilot is hard to beat if your work is inside Microsoft 365, and its included chat costs nothing extra. If the add-on price or the single vendor bothers you, ChatGPT Business, Claude Team, Gemini Enterprise, Mistral Le Chat and nerix are all credible. Compare them on your own tasks, check where data is processed, and buy seats only for the people who will use them.

Na co se lidé ptají

Do I need Microsoft Copilot if I already use Microsoft 365?
Not necessarily. Microsoft includes Copilot Chat at no extra cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans. The paid Copilot licence adds access to your files and mail across Microsoft 365. Try the included chat first and buy seats only for people who would use the deeper integration daily.
What is the main reason to choose an alternative?
Usually one of three: the price of an add-on on top of an existing plan, a wish to choose between models and providers, or a need to answer from documents that are not stored in Microsoft 365.
Can an alternative read my Outlook and SharePoint files?
Some can, through connectors, but none reads them as natively as Copilot does. If most of your knowledge lives in SharePoint, OneDrive and Outlook, that is a real point in Copilot's favour.
