The best Zendesk alternatives for a small business are Freshdesk for a familiar ticket desk, Help Scout for a shared-inbox feel, Zoho Desk and HubSpot if you want a free start, and nerix if you want support requests in the same place as your tasks and documents. Zendesk is powerful, but its plans are built for growing support teams, and many small businesses pay for more than they use. Here is how each option compares.

Prices checked in October 2026 and they change, so confirm them on the official pages: Zendesk, Freshdesk, Help Scout, Zoho Desk, HubSpot.

What Zendesk costs and why people leave

On Zendesk's German pricing page, Support Team is 19 euros per agent a month billed yearly and 25 euros billed monthly. Suite Team is 55 euros yearly and Suite Professional is 115 euros. AI agents are included but priced by automated resolutions, with a few included per agent and extra ones charged per resolution. Zendesk offers a 14-day trial rather than a free plan. For a team of three handling a modest volume, that is a lot of platform. People move for cost, for simplicity or because they want support next to other work.

Freshdesk

Good at: ticketing with a long feature list. Freshdesk's page lists Growth at 19 dollars per agent a month billed annually, Pro at 55 dollars and Enterprise at 89 dollars.

Falls short: the page lists no free plan, only a 14-day trial of the Enterprise plan. Its AI is sold in parts: the AI agent includes 500 sessions and extra sessions are priced per 100, and the agent copilot is listed at 29 dollars per agent a month as an add-on for Pro and Enterprise.

Help Scout

Good at: customer conversations that feel like email, without the heavy desk feeling. The free plan covers up to five users and one inbox, with a cap of 100 contacts a month and a small limit on saved replies, tags and articles.

Falls short: paid plans start at 25 dollars per user a month (Standard, up to 25 users). SLA policies come in the higher plans, and its AI chatbot is an add-on charged per resolution.

Zoho Desk

Good at: a free start and a ladder of plans. The page lists a free plan with three user licences and paid plans for Standard, Professional and Enterprise.

Falls short: the pricing page we checked showed rupees, and annual and monthly prices are behind a toggle, so check the page for your region.

HubSpot Service Hub

Good at: companies that already keep contacts in HubSpot, since tickets sit next to the customer record. HubSpot lists free tools for up to two users.

Falls short: the free tools are a starting point, and paid Professional plans carry an onboarding fee, according to the pricing page. Check what ticketing the free tools include before you rely on them.

nerix

Good at: support that sits beside the rest of the work. In Help desk, customers write through a portal, a website widget or email, when you set them up in Desk settings. Requests are tickets with a requester, a type, a state, a priority and an owner, and response targets show a First reply and a Solution time, with a list of requests that are breached or due soon. Internal notes and side conversations stay with the team, and only a public reply reaches the customer. Because requests are the same kind of item as tasks, support and the work it triggers live in one place.

Falls short: this is a lean help desk, not a contact centre. If you need phone support, a large app marketplace or heavy reporting, compare carefully. It is also a newer product than the others here.

Price: Free for one person (3,000 credits a month, and it never charges beyond that), Plus at 15 euros a month, Team at 24 euros per seat a month from three seats. See pricing. If AI help matters to you, remember that AI work spends credits, and the app shows the price before you send.

How to choose

  • Support is mostly email and you are two or three people. Help Scout's free plan or nerix.
  • You want the classic desk and can pay per agent. Freshdesk or Zendesk.
  • You already run HubSpot. Look at Service Hub first.
  • You want a free trial run on real tickets. Help Scout, Zoho Desk and HubSpot all list free options.
  • You want requests, tasks and documents in one tool. Test nerix.

Whatever you pick, write down your response targets first. A tool is only as good as the rules you set. Our guide to running a help desk for a small team covers that, and handling customer complaints covers the hard cases.

Before you switch

Support data is customer history, so protect it. Export your tickets, macros and help articles before you cancel, and test the import with fifty tickets to see which fields come across. Rebuild your response targets and categories in the new tool instead of copying every old rule, since most desks collect rules nobody uses. Tell customers if the address they write to or the portal link changes, and keep the old channel forwarding for a few months. If you use AI replies, check how each tool charges for them and which data it uses, because that is where costs surprise people.

The short version

Zendesk alternatives for a small business start with free plans: Help Scout, Zoho Desk and HubSpot each list one with limits. Freshdesk is the closest classic desk, and nerix suits teams that want support tickets next to their tasks and documents. Count agents, not features, test with real tickets and check how your data exports.

Vragen die mensen stellen

Is there a free Zendesk alternative?
Yes. Help Scout lists a free plan for up to five users, Zoho Desk lists a free plan for three user licences, and HubSpot offers free service tools for up to two users. Each has limits, so test with real tickets.
Do I need a help desk or just a shared inbox?
A shared inbox is enough when a few people answer a few emails a day. Move to a help desk when you need ownership, priorities, response targets and a history per customer.
Can I switch from Zendesk without losing my tickets?
Most tools can import tickets, but fields and attachments do not always match. Export your data first and try the import with a small batch.
