The best Asana alternatives for a small team are Trello for simple boards, ClickUp for a lot of features, monday.com for visual tracking, Basecamp for a flat price and nerix if you want tasks next to chat and documents. Asana is a solid choice, and what usually pushes teams away is the price per seat, the weight of the tool for a small team, or the wish for everything in one workspace. Each option below is compared on price, strengths and limits.

Prices checked in October 2026 and they change, so confirm them on the official pages: Asana, Trello, ClickUp, monday.com, Basecamp.

What Asana costs

According to its pricing page, Asana's Personal plan is free for up to two users. Starter is 10.99 dollars per user a month billed annually (13.49 dollars monthly), and Advanced is 24.99 dollars annually (30.49 monthly). Enterprise plans are by quote. Asana's page also lists AI usage per plan, with a small number of AI requests per user each month and extra requests sold separately. That is worth reading if you plan to lean on AI.

The options at a glance

Tool Best for Price from Free plan A key limit
Asana Structured team work 10.99 dollars per user a month, yearly Yes, 2 users AI requests are capped per plan
Trello Simple boards 5 dollars per user a month, yearly Yes Free: 10 boards per Workspace
ClickUp Everything in one tool Check their site Yes Many settings to learn
monday.com Visual tracking 9 euros per seat a month, yearly Yes, 2 seats Paid plans start at 3 seats
Basecamp A flat price per team Free, then 29 dollars a month Yes, 1 project Few views and reports
nerix Tasks with chat and documents Free, then 15 euros a month Yes Not built for large portfolios

Trello

Good at: boards and cards that anyone understands in a minute. The free plan lists up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, with 250 Workspace command runs a month.

Falls short: it is a board tool first, so timelines, workload and reporting need paid plans or add-ons. Large projects can become a pile of cards.

Price: Standard is 5 dollars per user a month billed annually (6 monthly), Premium is 10 dollars annually (12.50 monthly).

ClickUp

Good at: breadth. ClickUp's Free Forever plan lists unlimited tasks and members, plus several views, with limits on storage, spaces and automations. It also sells AI as credits.

Falls short: the depth can overwhelm a small team, and the pricing page shows two different layouts for paid plans, so confirm the current ones. Its free plan has 60 MB of file storage.

Price: paid plans start from roughly 9 dollars per user a month billed yearly on one layout of the page. Check the page before you rely on it.

monday.com

Good at: colourful boards that make status obvious to people who do not live in a task tool. The free plan covers up to two seats, three boards and three docs.

Falls short: the paid plans for work management start at three users, and the features you may want, such as more views and automations, sit on higher plans.

Price: Basic 9 euros, Standard 12 euros, Pro 19 euros per seat a month, billed annually, on monday.com's euro page.

Basecamp

Good at: a calm, opinionated tool with to-dos, messages, files and schedules per project. Pricing is flat per package rather than per user. The free plan allows one project and up to three users.

Falls short: if you want boards, timelines and custom fields, Basecamp deliberately keeps it simple. Plans cap the number of active projects and users.

Price: Freelancer is 29 dollars a month (up to 5 users, 3 projects), Pro 79 dollars (up to 10 users), Pro Unlimited 199 dollars a month billed annually.

nerix

Good at: work that starts as a conversation. Tasks and projects in nerix come as a list, a board, a table or a calendar, with states, checklists, subtasks, saved views and rules. You can ask the assistant what is overdue. Because tasks live in the same workspace as team chat, meetings and documents, an action item from a meeting becomes a task with an owner and a due date, and a chat message can become a task in one step.

Falls short: nerix is not aiming at portfolio management, resource planning or the reporting depth of the dedicated tools, and the integrations list is shorter. If you run complex projects with many dependencies, test it carefully against your real plan.

Price: Free for one person (3,000 credits a month, never charged beyond that), Plus at 15 euros a month, Team at 24 euros per seat a month from three seats. Tasks themselves are part of the product, and AI work spends credits, with the price shown before you send. See pricing.

How to choose

  • You want the simplest thing. Trello or Basecamp.
  • You want one tool for everything and enjoy tuning it. ClickUp.
  • Your team needs status to be visible at a glance. monday.com.
  • Your work starts in meetings and chat. Try nerix, and read project management without the overhead.
  • You are two people. Asana's free plan or any free plan will do, and the choice matters less than the habit of using it.

Pick one real project, move it, and run it for two weeks. If people stop opening the tool by week two, the tool is wrong for the team, however good its feature list.

Before you switch

Write down how your team really uses Asana: which projects, which views, which automations and who looks at what. Many teams find that they use a tenth of it, and that list is your shopping list. Export to CSV, import one project into the new tool and check that owners, due dates and subtasks arrive. Recreate only the rules you still need. Agree a single place for requests so work does not split between the old and new tools, and set a date when the old one becomes read-only.

The short version

The best Asana alternatives depend on what you are leaving: price (Trello, Basecamp), weight (Trello, nerix) or limits (ClickUp, monday.com). Every option here has a free plan with a real limit, so read it first. Move one project, run it for two weeks, and keep Asana until the new tool has earned its place.

Vragen die mensen stellen

What is the best free alternative to Asana?
Trello's free plan allows up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, ClickUp lists unlimited tasks and members on its free plan, and Basecamp has a free plan for one project. Asana's own free plan is for up to two users.
Do I need project management software at all?
A shared list can be enough for a team of two or three. Move to a tool when work has owners and deadlines that people forget, or when you spend meetings asking who is doing what.
How hard is it to move from Asana to another tool?
Most tools import CSV files, so tasks, owners and due dates can move. Comments, attachments and automations rarely do. Try a single project before you move the rest.
