## Key takeaways

- Perplexity is strong at fast, cited web answers, and its alternatives win on other points.
- Kagi and Brave win on privacy, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude win on being one assistant for many jobs, and nerix wins when the answer sits in your own documents.
- Try two for a week, open the sources, and pay only for the one you keep using.

The best Perplexity alternatives depend on what you use it for. For a private search engine with AI answers, look at Kagi or Brave. For web research inside a general assistant, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all search the web. For answers that come from your own documents instead of the open web, a workspace such as nerix fits better. Perplexity itself remains very good at fast, cited web answers, so this guide says what each option does better and worse.

## The options side by side

| Tool | Best for | Price from | Free plan | Key limit |

| Perplexity | Fast cited web answers | Pro $20 a month, $200 a year | Check their site | Web only, not your files |

| ChatGPT | One assistant for many jobs | Plus $20 a month | Yes | Usage caps |

| Gemini | Google users | AI Plus 4.99 euros (Germany) | Yes | Layered plans |

| Claude | Long reading and writing | Pro $20, $17 yearly | Yes | One company's models |

| Kagi | Private, ad-free search | Professional $10 a month | Check their site | Paid search engine |

| Brave Ask Brave | Free private answers | Free | Yes | Less depth than paid tools |

| nerix | Your documents plus the web | Free, then Plus 15 euros | Yes | Not a dedicated web search tool |

## Perplexity

Perplexity is an answer engine: you ask, it searches the web and replies with numbered sources. Its pricing page lists Pro at $20 a month or $200 a year, with Max and enterprise plans above it. Pro adds higher limits, file uploads and more.

Where it is strong: speed, and the habit of showing sources every time. Where it falls short for some people: it is built around the open web, so it does not know your own documents, and its answers still need checking, like every tool here.

## ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude

All three general assistants can search the web as part of a conversation, with free plans and paid plans from about $20 a month. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. Google lists a free Gemini tier that includes Deep Research, and paid plans from 4.99 euros a month in Germany. Claude has a free plan, Pro at $20 ($17 billed yearly) and Team seats from $20 per seat yearly.

Good for: people who want search, writing, files and analysis in one assistant, and who already pay for one of them.

Falls short: answers are woven into prose, so sources are sometimes less prominent than in a tool built around them. Check the links yourself, and note the usage limits on free plans.

## Kagi

Kagi is a paid, ad-free search engine with an AI assistant. Its pricing page lists Professional at $10 a month and Ultimate at $25 a month, with Assistant access scaling with the plan and premium models in Ultimate.

Good for: people who want search results without advertising and tracking, with AI as an extra.

Falls short: you pay for search, which many people are not used to, and it is a search engine first, not a research agent.

## Brave Search and Ask Brave

Brave says Ask Brave is free, works on any browser, needs no account and always grounds answers in the web, with sources. Brave also says questions are never used for training and that it does not retain IP addresses. Chats expire automatically.

Good for: free, private quick answers.

Falls short: it is built for quick answers, not long research reports, and Brave itself advises double checking AI responses before quoting them.

## nerix

We make nerix, so keep that in mind. nerix is not a web search engine. It is a workspace where you ask questions across your own contracts, reports and notes, and every sentence shows the document and page it came from. A setting called "Answer only from your documents" makes it say so when the files do not hold the answer, and it offers to search the web, asking first before anything leaves your organisation.

You choose the model per task across Mistral (processed in France, the default), OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and each answer names the model that wrote it. Plans are in euros: a Free plan, Plus at 15 euros a month, and team plans per seat. See [chat with sources](https://nerix.ai/product/chat), [library and search](https://nerix.ai/product/library) and [pricing](https://nerix.ai/pricing).

Falls short: if what you need is the fastest cited answer from the open web, Perplexity or a search engine does that job more directly. nerix is a better fit when the answer is in your own files. It still makes mistakes, and the product tells you to check the sources.

## How to choose

- **You search the open web all day and want quick cited answers:** Perplexity, or the web mode of ChatGPT or Gemini.

- **You want privacy and no ads:** Kagi if you will pay, Brave if you want free.

- **You want one assistant for everything:** ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.

- **The answer is in your own documents:** a workspace with a library and citations, such as nerix.

Whatever you pick, build the habit of opening sources. Ask the tool for the exact passage, check the date of the page, and be wary of claims that appear with only one source.

Tip

For anything you will publish or sign, find the original source yourself. An answer engine is a fast way to find it, not a replacement for reading it.

## Questions to ask before you switch

Switching tools costs time, so it is worth knowing what you actually want from the change.

**Is it the price?** Perplexity Pro at $20 a month matches ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro. If cost is the issue, the saving is in free plans (Brave, or the free tiers of the assistants) or in Kagi at $10 a month, not in another $20 subscription.

**Is it the sources?** Look at how each tool shows them. Perplexity numbers its sources by default. Others show them only when you ask, so prompt for links and quoted passages.

**Is it privacy?** Read what each vendor says about retention and training for your plan. Brave and Kagi are built around privacy. For work documents, a business plan with written terms is safer than any free tool.

**Is it depth?** If you need a long, structured report on a topic, try the deep research modes in the assistants, and expect to spend time verifying the result. A quick answer engine and a research report are different jobs.

**Is it your own material?** If half your questions are really about files you already own, an answer engine on the open web will keep missing the point. That is where a document workspace pays off.

## The short version

Perplexity is strong at fast, cited web answers, and its alternatives win on other points. Kagi and Brave win on privacy, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude win on being one assistant for many jobs, and nerix wins when the answer sits in your own documents. Try two for a week, open the sources, and pay only for the one you keep using.

## Questions people ask

What is the best free alternative to Perplexity?

Brave's Ask Brave is free and needs no account, and the free plans of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude can search the web with usage limits. Which is best depends on how often you search, so try two for a week.

Do AI answer engines make up sources?

They can misread a page or attach a claim to the wrong link. Open the cited page for anything you will quote or act on. A tool that shows its sources makes the check possible, but it does not do the check for you.

Is there an alternative that searches my own documents as well as the web?

Yes. Workspace tools such as nerix answer from your own files with the page shown, and can search the web when you allow it. Perplexity is stronger as a pure web research tool.
