## Key takeaways

- DocuSign alternatives include Dropbox Sign for plain signing, PandaDoc for proposals, Adobe Acrobat Sign for Adobe users and Documenso for open source.
- Free plans exist but carry limits on documents.
- Most commercial contracts can be signed electronically, but check your own case, and this is not legal advice.
- nerix covers simple signing inside a drafting workflow, not specialist needs.

The best DocuSign alternatives for a small business are Dropbox Sign for a simple, signing-only service, PandaDoc if you also write proposals and quotes, Adobe Acrobat Sign if your documents already live in Adobe tools, and Documenso if you want an open-source option you can host yourself. DocuSign is the best-known name and a capable product. People look elsewhere because of cost per user, envelope limits or because they only sign a few documents a month. Here is how the choices compare.

Prices checked in October 2026 and they change. ## Are electronic signatures valid?

Mostly yes, with exceptions. In the EU, the eIDAS regulation says an electronic signature cannot be refused legal effect only because it is electronic, and it separates simple, advanced and qualified signatures. A qualified signature has the same legal effect as a handwritten one. In the United States, the ESIGN Act and the state UETA laws set a similar basic rule for most commercial documents. Some document types, such as certain family-law or property papers, are often excluded or need extra formalities. This is general information, not legal advice. Ask a lawyer about contracts that carry real risk.

## The options at a glance

| Tool | Best for | Price from | Free plan | A key limit |

| DocuSign | Established, many integrations | About 10 dollars a month, check their site | Check their site | Envelope limits per plan |

| Dropbox Sign | Simple signing | 10.05 dollars a month, yearly | Yes, limited | Standard needs 2 or more users |

| PandaDoc | Proposals and quotes with signing | 19 dollars per seat a month, yearly | Yes | Template limits on lower plans |

| Adobe Acrobat Sign | Adobe and PDF users | Check their site | Check their site | Plans vary by region |

| Documenso | Open source, self-hosting | Free, then 25 dollars a month | Yes | 5 documents a month on free |

| nerix | Documents you draft in nerix | Free, then 15 euros a month | Yes | Not a dedicated signing service |

## DocuSign

**Good at:** the broadest recognition, so counterparties rarely hesitate, along with a wide integration list. Its pricing pages describe Personal, Standard and Business Pro plans, and the Personal plan includes a small number of envelopes a month.

**Falls short:** cost climbs per user and envelopes are limited on plans, so a team that signs often should read the limits. Its own pages show slightly different figures in places, so confirm the current price and the envelope allowance on the plans page.

**Price:** from roughly 10 dollars a month for one person on annual billing. Check the plans page.

## Dropbox Sign

**Good at:** doing one thing plainly. The page lists Essentials at 10.05 dollars a month billed annually (15 dollars monthly) for one user, Standard at 17.50 dollars per user billed annually for two or more users, and Premium by quote. It also offers a free option for signing a single document.

**Falls short:** it is a signing tool, not a document builder, and the free option is narrow. Teams of one will find Essentials enough, but you need two users for Standard.

## PandaDoc

**Good at:** documents that win business: proposals, quotes and contracts with signing built in. A Free eSign plan is listed, Starter is 19 dollars per seat a month billed annually, and Business is 49 dollars.

**Falls short:** if you only need signatures, you pay for features you will not use. The pages we checked described the free plan's document and template limits differently, so check the exact limits before relying on it.

## Adobe Acrobat Sign

**Good at:** teams that already live in PDFs and Adobe tools, and organisations with bigger compliance needs. Adobe sells it with Acrobat plans for individuals, teams and enterprises.

**Falls short:** the plan structure is varied and depends on region and billing choice. We could not confirm one current price, so check Adobe's page for your country.

## Documenso

**Good at:** an open-source signing product with hosted and self-hosted routes. The page lists a Free plan with 5 documents a month and up to 10 recipients per document, Individual at 25 dollars a month billed yearly, Teams at 40 dollars a month with 5 users, and custom plans, including self-hosting.

**Falls short:** a younger product with a smaller ecosystem. Self-hosting means you run, secure and back it up. Check the repository for the licence terms that apply to you.

## nerix

**Good at:** documents you already write with it. In nerix, AI output lands in the [Sheet](https://nerix.ai/product/sheet) as a document with versions, and a document can go out for signing with "Ask to sign" from Documents. The signer types a name, agrees to sign and the request keeps a trail of who opened and signed it and when. The final PDF goes to everyone and the version is marked as signed.

**Falls short:** nerix is not a dedicated e-signature service. The signature is a simple one, a typed or drawn name with an audit trail, and it does not offer advanced or qualified signatures with identity checks. It has no template library of thousands of forms and fewer integrations than DocuSign. Use it where a simple signature is legally enough for the document, and use a specialist when you need more.

**Price:** nerix has no per-signature fee on its pricing page. The plans are Free (3,000 credits a month, one person), Plus at 15 euros a month and Team at 24 euros per seat a month from three seats, and AI drafting spends credits. See [pricing](https://nerix.ai/pricing).

## How to choose

- **You sign a few documents a month.** A free plan from Dropbox Sign, PandaDoc or Documenso may be enough.

- **You send proposals and want signing at the end.** PandaDoc.

- **Your clients expect DocuSign.** Consider paying for it for the few cases that need it.

- **You want to keep data on your own server.** Documenso self-hosted, with someone to run it.

- **You draft contracts and want signing in the same place.** Look at nerix for simple cases.

Before you choose, ask what level of signature your contract needs and where the signed copies will be stored. Our guide to [contract clauses to read twice before you sign](https://nerix.ai/blog/contract-clauses-to-read-twice-before-you-sign) is a good companion.

## Before you switch

Keep your signed documents. Download the completed PDFs and the certificates or audit trails from your current service before you cancel, because you may need them years later. Check whether your counterparties or your industry require a specific provider or a qualified signature, and whether your contract templates need re-creating in the new tool. Ask where signed copies are stored and in which country, and how long they are kept. Finally, send a test document to yourself and to a colleague on a phone, since the signing experience for the other person is what decides whether contracts come back signed.

## The short version

DocuSign alternatives include Dropbox Sign for plain signing, PandaDoc for proposals, Adobe Acrobat Sign for Adobe users and Documenso for open source. Free plans exist but carry limits on documents. Most commercial contracts can be signed electronically, but check your own case, and this is not legal advice. nerix covers simple signing inside a drafting workflow, not specialist needs.

## Questions people ask

Is an electronic signature legally valid?

In the EU, the eIDAS regulation says an electronic signature cannot be denied legal effect only because it is electronic. In the United States, the ESIGN Act and state UETA laws give a similar basic rule. Some documents are excluded in many countries, so check your case. This is not legal advice.

Is there a free DocuSign alternative?

Yes. Dropbox Sign, PandaDoc and Documenso each list a free option with limits on documents or features. Read the limits before you rely on one for client contracts.

What is the difference between a simple and a qualified electronic signature?

Under eIDAS, a simple signature is the basic kind, such as a typed name with an audit trail. Advanced and qualified signatures add stronger identity checks, and a qualified signature carries the same legal effect as a handwritten one across the EU. Ask a lawyer which your contract needs.
