## Key takeaways

- To chat with PDF files, pick a tool that cites the page.
- ChatPDF is the quickest for one file, NotebookLM suits research, Acrobat suits Adobe users and ChatGPT or Claude work for one-off questions.
- nerix suits teams that need to ask across many documents with sources.
- Verify every answer that matters and check the data terms first.

The best way to chat with PDF files is a tool that answers from the document itself and shows the page each claim came from, so you can check it in seconds. Adobe Acrobat, Google's NotebookLM and ChatPDF are made for the job, general assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude can do it too, and a workspace such as nerix suits people who need to ask across many files at once. Here is how they compare, with prices and honest limits.

Prices checked in October 2026. Use the official pages before buying: [Acrobat](https://www.adobe.com/acrobat/pricing.html), [NotebookLM](https://notebook.google/plans), [ChatPDF](https://www.chatpdf.com/), [ChatGPT](https://chatgpt.com/pricing) and [Claude](https://claude.com/pricing).

## The tools side by side

| Tool | Best for | Price from | Free plan | Key limit |

| Adobe Acrobat Studio | People who already edit PDFs in Acrobat | US$24.99 a month, yearly plan billed monthly | Reader is free, no free AI plan listed | AI Assistant only in Studio |

| NotebookLM | Study and research across sources | Part of Google AI plans | Yes, 50 sources per notebook | Google's terms and limits apply |

| ChatPDF | A quick answer from one file | Plus plan, price on their site | Yes, 2 documents a day | Free daily cap |

| ChatGPT or Claude | One-off questions on a file | From about $20 a month | Yes | No library of your files |

| nerix | Many documents, with sources | Free, then Plus 15 euros | Yes | Younger product |

## Adobe Acrobat AI Assistant

Adobe's AI Assistant sits inside the PDF software many offices already use. In Adobe's current lineup, it is included in Acrobat Studio at US$24.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly (US$34.99 month to month), and not in Acrobat Standard or Pro for individuals. Teams pay US$29.99 per licence a month for Studio. Students and teachers can add it to Pro for US$1.99 a month.

Good for: people who already edit, sign and organise PDFs in Acrobat and want questions answered in the same place.

Falls short: it costs more than the other options here if all you want is questions and answers, and Adobe lists no free AI tier, only free trials.

## NotebookLM

Google's NotebookLM, now shown by Google as Gemini Notebook, lets you gather sources in a notebook and ask questions across them. Google's help pages say free users can add up to 50 sources per notebook, and Google AI Pro raises that to 300. Each source can hold up to 500,000 words or 200 MB.

Good for: students and researchers who want to question a pile of papers, with summaries and study aids.

Falls short: it is built around notebooks, not around a business library with folders, permissions and team members, and the limits depend on which Google plan you hold.

## ChatPDF

ChatPDF does one thing: you upload a PDF and ask. The free plan lets you analyse two documents a day, and a paid Plus plan removes that limit. Its site did not show a Plus price when we checked, so look at the upgrade page.

Good for: the fastest route from a single file to an answer.

Falls short: the free daily limit is tight, and a single-file tool does not help when the answer is spread over fifty contracts.

Try it on your own work.

nerix writes the first draft, answers from your documents with the page each sentence came from, and keeps the team's work in one place. Start on the free plan.

## ChatGPT and Claude

You can attach a PDF to a conversation in ChatGPT or Claude and ask about it. Both have free plans and paid plans from about $20 a month, with higher limits for uploads and long documents. Claude is often chosen for long files, and ChatGPT adds data analysis and image features.

Good for: one-off questions, and people who already pay for the assistant.

Falls short: files live inside a conversation, not in a library you can search later, and you need to ask for the page reference yourself. If the file is long or scanned, check the answer against the page.

## nerix

We build nerix, so judge this section accordingly. nerix keeps your PDFs, spreadsheets, presentations and scans in a document library and answers from them. Every claim carries the document and page it came from, with the passage quoted, and a setting called "Answer only from your documents" makes the assistant refuse rather than fill gaps from general knowledge. You can ask across everything at once, and it can search the web when you allow it, asking first before anything leaves your organisation.

Plans are in euros: a Free plan for one person that is never charged, Plus at 15 euros a month, Pro at 39 euros, and team plans per seat. The AI work is paid in credits, with the price shown before you send a question. See [chat with sources](https://nerix.ai/product/chat), [library and search](https://nerix.ai/product/library) and [pricing](https://nerix.ai/pricing).

Falls short: nerix is younger than Adobe or Google, it has no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 yet, and it still makes mistakes, which is why it asks you to check the sources. If you only ever read one PDF a week, a simpler tool is enough.

## How to choose

- **One file, one question:** ChatPDF, ChatGPT or Claude is quick and cheap.

- **Studying or research:** NotebookLM was designed for it.

- **You already live in Acrobat:** the AI Assistant keeps everything in one place, at a price.

- **Many documents, a team and sources:** a workspace with a searchable library, such as nerix.

Two checks apply to all of them. First, open the cited page for every number, date and quote that matters. Second, read what happens to your file: where it is processed, how long it is kept and whether it trains models. For confidential material, use a plan with written terms rather than a free tool.

Warning

Never upload a document you are not allowed to share with a third party. A free tool is still a third party.

## Getting better answers from any of them

The tool matters, but so does the way you ask. A few habits work everywhere:

- **Ask for the page.** End the question with "and give the page number". A tool that cannot do that is telling you something.

- **Ask one thing at a time.** "What is the notice period, and who can terminate?" is two questions. Ask them separately and the answers are easier to check.

- **Say what you want back.** A table of dates, a list of obligations or a three line summary each give a different, more useful answer than "summarise this".

- **Allow "not found".** Tell the tool to say so when the document does not contain the answer. This cuts the risk of a confident invention.

- **Check the scan.** If the PDF is a photographed page, look at the text the tool actually read before you trust a figure from it.

For long contracts, read the clauses that carry money, deadlines and liability yourself, and use the AI to find them and to explain them in plain words. It is a fast reader, not a lawyer.

## The short version

To chat with PDF files, pick a tool that cites the page. ChatPDF is the quickest for one file, NotebookLM suits research, Acrobat suits Adobe users and ChatGPT or Claude work for one-off questions. nerix suits teams that need to ask across many documents with sources. Verify every answer that matters and check the data terms first.

## Questions people ask

Is it safe to upload a confidential PDF to an AI tool?

It depends on the tool and the plan. Read where it processes files, how long it keeps them and whether they can be used for training. For contracts or personal data, prefer a business plan with clear terms, and avoid free consumer tools unless the terms say your files are not used for training.

Can AI read scanned PDFs?

Many tools can read scans by recognising the text, but accuracy drops with poor scans, handwriting and complex tables. Always open the cited page and check any number or quote that matters.

How do I know the AI did not make up the answer?

Choose a tool that cites the page for each claim, and open the page. A tool that can say it did not find the answer in your document is safer than one that always answers.
